NXEngine (Cave Story) BETA 1 Dingux

NXEngine (Cave Story) BETA 1
December 23, 2010

CAVE STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BETA 1 release of NXEngine for Dingux, a clone/engine-rewrite of the classic jump-and-run platformer Cave Story.
v103 23/12/2010 (

Hello everyone.

This is a BETA release of NXEngine, meaning, some stuff is still missing.
And by some stuff I mean the soundtrack. The performance of the music part of the engine on the Dingoo is terrible,
it is stuttering and lagging. That's why I disabled it by default (you can still re-enable it through the menu).
I know, a Cave Story without it's soundtrack is not the same. But it's better to have a music-less Cave Story
on the Dingoo than not have it at all, right?
When will the music support be fixed? Can't tell, it's not up to me, but to the original author of this engine.
If you want to bug her about it, I encourage you to mail her at kty(at)lavabit(dot)com. I originally planned to wait
with the release until I get a music patch from her, but after several months of waiting I decided to release
this nice beta in it's current form. I know you guys were waiting for it as well

* 1 x Dingoo A320/A330 with Dingux installed
* 1 x mini/microSD card
* 1 x NXEngine
* 1 x Win32 version of the original Cave Story english datafiles

1) Extract the contents of NXEngine onto your SD card.
2) Copy the "Doukutsu.exe" and "data" dir from the original datafiles into the newly extracted "nxengine" dir
3) Run nx.dge executable
4) Wait a moment. The black screen on the first run is normal

You can remove "Doukutsu.exe" file after the first successful run.

In case of any trouble installing it, follow the instructions that appeared on your Dingoo's screen after you
launched nx.dge

Merry Christmas!

PS.  The nx.png icon is nicked from GP2X version of Cave Story, I hope they don't mind
PS2. Yes, I'm still working on GP2X/WIZ/Caanoo/Pandora versions of NXEngine.

Yes thats right its another SMSPLUS can never have too many ports right Wink
I started this before Dingear was released, if I had known someone else was working on a port I would probably not have bothered but hey the work is done now so I may as well release it.
Just in case you have never heard of SMS Plus, it is a Sega Master and Sega Game Gear Emulator originally created by a bloke called Charles MacDonald ( http:// ).
Downloads are below.
Installation instructions can be found in the readme.txt found in the zip file but basically just copy the contents of the file to the Games directory on your Dingoo and then update your jukebox.  You should then be able to launch SMS and GG roms via the Roms menu option on your Dingoo.
Press SELECT to enter the menu system where you can change various settings and save or load your games etc.
The emulator is based on the excellent Dingoo SDK created by Flatmush and Harteex and so should work on all Dingoo models.

Hello fellow Dinguxers!

In this version, we added an official port for Dingux, we hope you guys enjoy and help reporting bugs or contributing with code, graphics, music, sounds or ideas.

Dingear v0.2 (preview) - Another smsplus port but with a major twist
December 12, 2010

Another update for the new SMS/GG Native OS emulator has been released.

Here is the preview of another port of SMSPLUS but specifically crafted for the Dingoo console.
There's still several small issues (like the sound volume being extremely low) and no decent menus yet
however it already have some exclusive features i haven't found in other emulators:

- Fullscreen with bilinear filtering (ipu).
- Hardware vsync on both tvout & lcd.
- Full framerate (obtained via heavy use of the processor mxu and the ipu running in parallel).

I don't know if it works as planed on ILI9325 based consoles.

Commands are:

Left trigger: reset (sms)
Right trigger: exit
B: button 1
Y: button 2
Select: full screen on/off
Start: start (gg)

Dingear 0.1 (preview) Native

Dingear 0.1 (preview)
December 13, 2010

Here is a new sms emulator for us. This is for the native os.
Thanks to for the news

Translated from website...

hitchhikr launched the emulator Dinger . The emulator, which emulates games Master System, is a port of the emulator SMSPLUS , released a few weeks ago by reesy .

But, unlike the port mentioned above, which runs in Dingux specifically, the Dinger has been ported to run on the system's native Dingoo. As you can see, this is a version preview . Therefore, the emulator has a few bugs , such as not have menus or run with extremely low volume. But in contrast, already incorporates some nice features, such as running with full framerate , hardware v-sync on the TV-Out, and LCD screens and full-screen option with bilinear filtering.

To the comrades who enjoy a good emulation of the Master System, this emulator, although it has limitations at this time, it shows good for this job.

Booboo returns with good news!

Booboo has returned, with a great post on China Chip that look promising in the extreme! Click on the link to read his whole post; I’ve honed in on the Dingoo stuff!

Back from China

I'll also try to quickly summarize, for now, the content of the meetings with the ChinaChip folks:
- They will make changes to their bootloader and internal flash layout so that the dingux kernel and rootfs is installed in the internal flash. Both for the A320 and GA330 consoles. You'll have access to the internal flash from dingux (but the NTFL won't be released). The installation of dingux will be streamlined in the same way native firmware updates are, so no need to fiddle with usb tools any more.
- There will be dingux for the GA330, with full hardware support, and full open source. There's no problem with knockoffs here because it is based in their propietary CC1800 chip not available to third parties (as opposed to the JZ4732 in the A320).
- There is no schedule for the above as of now, since they're yet to decide if and how they'll sponsor it. In other words, one extreme is I work on it on a hobby basis as I've been so far and at zero cost, and the other extreme is they hire me full time. Anything in between is possible.
- The next generation of consoles will be based on the CC2000 and expected to roll out by Q2 next year. The CC2000 will be announced in a month or so, and I've been kindly asked not to reveal the details, but as you can imagine, it's beast compared to the JZ4732 and CC1800.
I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but I'll continue posting as things come up while I review my notes and prepare the reports of the meetings I'll be sending to ChinaChip. I'll also review the huge lot of pictures I took and post some.

Some of Booboo’s responses to comments are also worth reading too.  Chinachip appear keen to open their console, a first for this sort of device from China.  Who knows where this promising philosophy can lead?

Booboo heads to China (and how to get unlimited wifi at Paris Airport:))

Traveling to China

I'm leaving tomorrow to HK/China, where I'll be meeting the ChinaChip people. Will be back in a week, but will try to update as time permits on anything relevant to dingux on the GA330.
UPDATE: Paris CDG airport is da bomb. At least in terminal E where I am as I write this, plenty of places to lay and take a nap, massage chairs, PS3 for entertainment (free). The 5 hours I have to wander here suddenly don't feel so uphill.
They even have 10 minute free wifi. Too bad it's only 10 minutes. Unless you disconnect, clear the browser cookies, change the WiFi interface MAC address, and connect again, of course. You didn't read that here.
sudo ifconfig wlan0 hw ether [your previous MAC + 1]

This can only be good news for the Gemei A330!

Java on A320

Yes, it’s there, and that’s about it:

Booboo dissects the Gemei A330

Well, he dissected it about a 2 weeks ago, but hey, if you hang out here, you’re used to this sort of thing, right? I’ve bold underlined the bits that get me all interested  …

GA330 specs

I believe there's some confusion on the GA330 specs. As I mentioned in the previous post, I have only preliminary, general, info, but this is what I found out so far (don't take it for granted anyway):

  • CC1800 processor (ARM926 400MHz).
  • 320x240 LCD, slightly larger than the A320 one.
  • 64MB RAM.
  • 2.4 GHz communication module. This is a true radio device and not just a keyboard hack. Enables multiplayer and custom peripherals.
  • USB OTG port, which allows connecting USB devices, but you'll need external +5V power (i.e. a powered hub).
The CC1800 has some nice features: the OMIP seems to be a video decoding coprocessor, and the VPU seems to be some kind of video post processor which can do quick scaling and color conversion before spitting out the data to the LCD.
I would say that the CC1800 CPU core belongs in the same class than the JZ4732 in the A320, however, being an ARM architecture has the advantage of the existing assembly optimized emulation cores. I bet that the VPU will allow a sizeable boost in performance by offloading the color conversion work from the SDL code.
64MB vs. 32MB in the A320 are a big advantage too.

GA330 guts

It's been some time now since I received the two Gemei A330 sent by ChinaChip (GA330 from now on, to distinguish it from the other A330 out there which is basically an A320 with 64MB RAM). We're still working out the details (NDA, possible trip to China) to acquire the required info on the CC1800 SoC (system-on-chip) in order to port dingux to it, and it might still take a bit longer. Please excuse me if I don't comment more on the matter until everything is settled.
I'm working on the x760+ dingux port. As I said, I have all the required info, but time is limited and I've invested most of it reviewing all my initial work together with recent developments. Please be patient (yes, even more, sorry).
Meanwhile, here you have some electronics pron:

You'll notice that there is no battery in the pictures. The samples were sent without battery due to customs regulations, and though it's not strictly necessary for development, I'll get hold of substitutes soon.
You know I don't use the A320 and GA330 much for gaming (lack of time, you know, bla bla bla), so I can't give you a thorough review of the new GA330. Here are some first impressions. Please bear in mind that I'm not sure to which point the samples I got are definitive production machines, so take it with a pinch of salt:

  • The construction build feels good but not as good as the A320.
  • The LCD is exposed, i.e. there is no plastic protection (which is part of the enclosure) over it, as happens in the A320 and the X760+. This is definitely a no-no.
  • The LCD is a "delta matrix" type. Don't know much about the technology (I'll appreciate links), but it basically means that the color dots are not aligned in an orthogonal matrix but spread in a zig-zag pattern. This is supposed to be better for displaying pictures and video, but I think it's not good for games.
Please let me stress what I already said: these might not be definitive production units and the final product to market may have many of these thingies fixed. Also, note that ChinaChip actively supporting linux on their machines is a huge advance, and a first in the chinese PMP market as far as I know. And more powerful machines will come in the near future.
One final comment on the CC1800: it has a video processing unit (VPU) capable of doing scaling and all kinds of color conversion. The JZ4732 in the A320 has an image processing unit (IPU) which unfortunately is only good for converting YUV to RGB. This is very useful for video playing but useless for gaming. The CC1800's VPU will allow to provide each game with the framebuffer resolution and color space which is best suited, allowing for a significant increase in performance. Being an ARM processor will allow also to use the already existing assembly optimized emulation cores, for another boost in performance.

eduke32 release #3 for Dingux

eduke32 release #3 for Dingux
November 8, 2010

zear has finally released an update to his eduke32 Duke Nukem port for Dingux

here's a lot of new stuff in this release, let's just name some bigger changes:
* D-PAD aiming and D-PAD weapon/item selection
* savestate autonaming
* better button mapping in menus
* ability to change/delete button mapping via the game menu
* removed the security camera preview while standing next to it for performance improvement (you can still just use them to see the cam view)

A lot of these changes (namely: D-PAD aiming & weapon/item selection, savestate autonaming, minor performance fixes) were made by the original eduke32 developers, so I would like to take this moment to thank them for interest and help with this port despite not having the Dingoos themselves. If anyone would like to thank those guys (and motivate them to support Dingoo platform in the future), you can always donate to the project on their official website.

I have playtested and completed all the three original episodes on the Dingoo, so I can proudly announce that with this release, Duke Nukem 3D is 100% playable and completable on our handhelds. And it was a lot of fun too (especially with the boss battles).

Note: Since the game now reads from and stores to the current directory, /local/home/.eduke32 dir is redundant. So if you are updating from an older version, it is a good idea to remove that dir so it won't interfere with the new version. And remember to read the readme.txt
