Native PC Engine emulator released (beta)

alekmaul is on fire. This time he brings a native PC Engine emulator called DOOEngine. The emulator is still in beta though, and may cause the Dingoo to hang on some games.

Hi all, here is a new emulator DOOEngine :P, my native dingoo PC Engine emulator.
Put DOOEngine.SIM in your GAME directory. Put your .PCE games where you want.
Use "Interesting game" from Dingoo menu and choose your .PCE file, the emu will launch with the game ;)
Warning, it's only a beta release (i will be very busy so i don't know when i will improve it) and some games hangs the Dingoo,
To help me to improve it, just tell me which games are not ok (name and CRC, you have the CRC in menu).
V0.9b : 30/08/2009

You can see my webpage about it here : DOOEngine For Dingoo. Also, the website is in French 8-)

Otioprog and PSX4DINGOO

Otioprog steps up to the mark and has made a video of the Dingoo running a PSX emulator:

Otio’s aim is to play Final Fantasy VII on it.  Judge for yourself whether it’s worth his effort!

Also check out his blog: http://psx4dingoo.blogspot.com/ (although it seems to be down for the moment).

New Dingux menu released by Slaneesh - DingooXMB

image

An alternative to Dmenu is now available! Grab it here.

DinguXMB v1.0 (26/08/2009)
A Cross Media Bar for the Dingoo A320
Copyright (C) 2007 Mikael Ganehag Brorsson
Port by Slaanesh continuing work from BooBoo's port.
===============================================================================
INTRODUCTION
  `DinguXMB' is an alternative launcher for the Dingoo run Dingux.
  It has the same visual layout as the Sony Cross Media Bar.
  DinguXMB is a port of the original GP2XMB.
===============================================================================
ORIGINAL NOTES
  GP2XMB is currently under heavy development and you are encouraged to try
  out the latest version and come with new suggestions and patches to improve
  the quality of the software.
  The following features should be included in GP2XMB in the future:
    - Game Launcher (Divided into a shortcut lanucher and a browser)
    - Photo Viewer (Close to finished, only minor things and bugs left)
    - Music Player (A simple Vorbis player, libmad support in the future)
    - Video Player (Pre-design, Currently uses the internal player)
    - Settings Menu (Various settings implemented)
===============================================================================
INSTALLATION
  Installing DinguXMB is fairly straight forward.
    - Unpack the binary release to a directory ie. /usr/local/dinguxmb
    - Copy the 'main' script to /usr/local/sbin. The 'main' script assumes
      that you have installed to /usr/local/dinguxmb. Edit it if necessary.
    - The executable is dynamically compiled. You need the latest rootfs.
  To run, start your Dingoo (with Dingux).
===============================================================================
KEYS
  Press 'A' to select
  Press 'B' to cancel or go back
  Press 'L' to decrease volume.
  Press 'R' to increase volume.
  Press 'X' to create a shortcut. You must have a valid executable currently
            highlighted from the games section (see below).
  Press 'SELECT' to exit. The 'main' script provides a 5 second countdown.
            The intention is that you can safely use this time to switch off.
===============================================================================
GAME LAUNCHER
  Only executable files ending with '.sh' or '.dge' are recognized by
  the launcher.
  Accompanying '.png' icons are also displayed (nice!).
  I think it would be a good idea of the Dingoo A320 community standardizes
  to these two of suffixes.
  '.sh' for scripts
  '.dge' for binary executables
  All my future releases will follow this format.
===============================================================================
NOTES
  - Many features are missing. Many features already work.
  - You will have to experiment a little.
  - For now, it launches games/applications and has the ability to create
    shortcuts which is good enough for me.
===============================================================================

Official Firmware 1.11 exists – fixes Korean Fonts

Some newer Dingoos apparently have a v1.11 official firmware.  This thread seems to confirm that the only difference is that it fixes Korean Fonts.

News of Dingoo-Digital - as George Clooney says in Oceans 11: “I know a guy …”

In all the excitement over the regular Dingux and native releases, it’s easy to forget that the Dingoo A320 comes from a mysterious company which, for its own inscrutable reasons, likes to keep its head down and its mouth shut. But this also makes  any news that does emerge all that much sweeter to absorb.  There are these very interesting news nuggets from Dingoo, via third parties, on this thread at the Dingoo-Digital forum (thanks to harteex for the heads up!):

From kswildside (26/8/09):

Being a vendor for Dingoo-Digital China I can say they are working on new projects as we speak as for the A330 it's a myth they are very secretive on the projects they are working on and to allow a leak is unheard of by them.

This is the reason they encrypted the OS and haven't released the keys or password to open up the OS or made it free domain.

As for support they plan to support the A320 for a long time to come. As for games they were an application/game developer for cell phones etc before they became a hardware manufacturer... So games will trickle down as they make them. As for bug fixes haven't heard of any of them being worked on or solved but as a vendor I will express your dismay and let them know we as a community want a fix.

As in any scene with a foreign supplier there is controversy over whether they will do this or that and all kinds of rumors about this and that. Just as I have heard the rumor that Gemeni still makes the A320 for Dingoo-Digital China but I have heard it both ways and direct from Dingoo they state they have there own engineers so I will get a direct answer to all questions during our next order.

From Jenny at www.dingoo888.co.uk (26/8/09):

Straight from dingoo digital in China:

1) They won't cease support of the A320, even if a replacement product is released. The warranties will be honoured for the full 1-year term, and in any case, we are going to support our customers in the UK and Europe alongside the official support from Dingoo.

2) The A330 'leak' is unconfirmed. Dingoo digital are investigating it literally *right now*. The A380 'leak' from a few months ago is definitely fake, and sites in China taking orders for it are fraudulent.

3) There will almost certainly be firmware updates for the A320 in future. What will be in the update is a different matter.

4) Dingoo are aware that there is a community of users outside China.

Dingoo is basically split into two companies - Dingoo Games is based in Chengdu, and Dingoo Digital is based in Shenzhen. The Chengdu-based group is under the control of the Shenzhen-based company.

A lot of Dingoo's development resource is concentrated on 3D game development, and on future projects.

The relationship between Gemei and Dingoo digital is an interesting one - it's not quite as simple as Dingoo buying the rights to the hardware from Gemei - but they aren't the 'same' company either.

Dingoo UK Sales and Support (www.dingoo888.co.uk)

There’s not too much here which, to be frank, is terribly different from what can reasonably be surmised by reading this and this from 3 months ago! The more things change …

Still, it is good to know that Dingoo Digital lives and breathes, and are at least active  enough to apparently be quoted! kswildside/Jenny from DingooUK, you are welcome here any time to share any other news.

One of the most requested emulators sees the dawn of day at last … with thanks and full creds to xzakox!

Hi!
This a fresh port of the stella 2.3.5 to dingux, it has some hacks, but it seems to work nicely.
As usual... put it in your SD Card under local/whatever and add an entry to your dmenu like:

  MenuItem Stella
  {
    Icon = "/usr/local/emus/stella/stella.png"
    Name = "Stella"
    Executable = "./stella"
    WorkDir = "/usr/local/emus/stella"
    Selector = no

eduke32 (Duke Nukem 3d) for Dingux

eduke32 (duke3d) for dingoo linux

Duke Nukem 3D
ImageImageImage
NAM
ImageImage
Actual Dingoo eduke32 gameplay screenshots
Eduke32 is an enchanced port of Duke Nukem 3D engine.
Features:
* Hundreds of new features that make the player's life easier
* An incredible number of new extensions to the game's CON scripting system, allowing gameplay changes that rival even modern games
* It's the only actively developed and maintained Duke3D port
* Compatible with mods for EDuke 2.0, the original extension to Duke3D's editing capabilities
* Hundreds of optimizations and fixes for rare and annoying bugs in the original code
* It supports Ogg Vorbis for sound effects and music
* It supports user maps that are larger and more complex than ever before, both in terms of wall/sector/sprite counts and how much of the map can be rendered at once
* It's developed by people who have been in the Duke3D scene since day one, way back in 1996
* It lets you play that game called 'NAM' you saw at the dollar store
* It makes sandwiches
Download: file archive mirror
Installation:
1) Copy the eduke32 directory somewhere on your filesystem
2) Put the duke3d.grp file from your original datafiles in the same directory
3) Place eduke32.cfg config file in the ~/.eduke32 directory
4) Run ./eduke32 executable
Controls:
D-PAD - movement
A - shoot
B - strafe
X - use/run
Y - jump
L - crouch/cycle items
R - cycle weapons
START - use item
SELECT - game menu
All the controls are custimozable in the menu
Bugs:
* The first eduke32 launch after dingux reboot will always result in a crash. Simply run the game again.
* When the music is enabled, there is a chance the game will freeze on the map loading screen.
Disable music in the game menu to prevent that from happening.
Credits:
I'd like to thank the following people:
* Plagman - for help with debugging the eduke32 source
* mth - for writing the 16bpp video conversion for Dingoo
* people from #eduke32 on freenode - for many hints and general help

Dingux TXT file reader

Whoa, missed this from last week:

Basic Text Reader for Dingux - SDLread v0.9

Postby mrLogan on Thu Aug 20, 2009 5:44 pm

Image
SDLread v0.9
============
A very basic text reader using SDL and bitmap fonts.
Up/Down = Page Up / Page Down
Select = Exit
A = Toggle Little Font / Big Font
Why version 0.9? Because it's not very good. It's just for reading 'readme' kind of files.
NOTE: You need to install it in your dmenu with the 'selector' property set to 'yes' so that
you can select a text file to pass through to the program.
e.g.
MenuItem Read
{
Icon = "res/system.png"
Name = " Read"
Executable = "./sdlread"
WorkDir = "/usr/local/apps/read"
Selector = yes
}

Half-life on Dingoo – WTF?

This has popped up on Youtube …

This looks blocky - like the PS1 port which was released.  Or maybe I haven’t played Hail Life for so long, I’ve forgotten how blocky it really was! Either way, it’s food for thought! Rikkuff2000 , how about some details? It looks good!

UPDATE: Thank you intrepid readers! This appears to be a Quake Mod: http://forums.qj.net/psp-development-forum/146053-idea-quake-life-psp-half-life-mod.html

Video overview of MAME, Megadrive, SNEX and Atari ST emulators on Dingux

Maybe this will help get the C64 to Dingoo

We remain here at Dingoo-Scene committed to subtly and with class, braying for the cause of the humble, ever beloved C64.

We have posted about how you can pretend one already exists for the Dingoo, and welcomed willingly both the Spectrum and Atari ST emulators to Dingux.  But it’s just not the same!  Still we wait, patiently, boats against the currents, like Robert Redford.

Perhaps then, these issues of ZZAP64 – the greatest C64 Magazine Ever - might bring a nostalgic tear to the eye of someone with the means and knowhow to port VICE or some other C64 emulator to Dingoo.  They have been carefully selected to provide, in just 3 issues, the life and times of our favourite 8-bit computer.

First, Issue #7 from when the C64 was a fledgling birdling, only just beginning to spread its wings:

zzap7

Issue #28, at which time it was the only show in town if you wanted to game at home on a computer:

zzap28

Through to issue#58, by which time we were buying the mag mainly to perve at those Amiga screenshots:

zzap58

Grab’em all, read ‘em and weep, as they say, then please, if you can, someone bring the old girl home to the Dingoo.

Timidity sound patch for Prboom

Many might find this useful:

A small fix for Timidity sound configuration

Postby CirothUngol on Fri Aug 21, 2009 1:26 am

I ran into a problem with the Default Timidity Patch. Sometimes an instrument would drone or whine endlessly. I found that removing all of the keep=loop commands from the timidity.cfg file solved the problem. If you've had similar issues, I suggest you try it... or just re-download it here:

Timidity4Dingoo

...all I've done is fixed the configuration file.

Incidently, has anyone been able to run a better set of instrument patches? I tried to use Eric A. Welsh's EAWPats v1.2, but couldn't get them to work. Its only slightly larger, but it has a better diversity and is more complete. I was wondering if it would bog down the PRBoom engine any worse than it already is. Anyone else have better luck?

Re: A small fix for Timidity sound configuration

Postby Wren on Fri Aug 21, 2009 2:21 am

I use the Unison soundfont with ScummVM on my PC and I am pretty sure I've used it with Timidity in the past. It's a nice general purpose sound bank. Give it a shot and see what you think.

If the links are broken, you might have to google around for it.

zear posts Clonekeenplus - Commander Keen for Dingux

Here it is:
http://wade.hu/~zear/a320/clonekeenplus-alpha.tar.bz2 <- here's my early port of clonekeenplus.
Video output is fine, but the sound problem still remains.

All the best stuff comes from Asia ……

The Pacific Century we are most certainly living in brings with it many bounteous wonders from the once mysterious East!  We have reaped the bounty of Almighty Dingoo.  Gemei entices us with the A330.  Daily, DX lays the treasures of China onto our browsers, that we may consume more and more and more and more!

Indeed, in the seminal end bit of the ageless (literally) trilogy, Back to the Future Part III, we are exposed to a preview of this truth - although it does reference the wrong part of that world:

Young Doc: No wonder this circuit failed. It says "Made in Japan".
Marty McFly: What do you mean, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan.
Young Doc: Unbelievable.

The best stuff though, is not limited to portable gaming machines! It includes stuff like this. I present to you Wonderful Chicken:

WonderfulChicken

For those of you who enjoy the Colonel’s secret recipe, there is now an alternative! Like the Dingoo to a JAMMA boarded arcade cabinet, you can now enjoy your South-eastern Fried anywhere, anytime! At least that’s the promise, until you open the pack and discover this is what the contents actually look like:

WonderfulChicken-2

Sadly, I have to report that despite the name, the product is devoid of actual, ah, chicken.  I’m going to put my foot down, and say that “Artificial Chicken Powder” doesn’t count.  It does in fact contain vegetable oil, pepper, corn powder, soy sauce, pepper, sugar, and seasoning.  What does matters is how those crunchy bits of heart stopping goodness taste …

** chrunchn chomp **

… and I have to report that they are GOOD! Not unexpectedly, they taste nothing like KFC.  They are predominantly sweet and peppery, with undertones of melty oil and powdery corn, like a sugary twistie.  But who cares? Many would argue there is no real chicken in KFC either.

If you live near Sydney’s Chinatown, you can get yourself some Wonderful Chicken at the Chinese Grocer diagonally opposite Haymarket, on the Emperor’s Garden meatmarket side of the shops, for the grand sum of AUD$1.60.  There is absolutely no reason this cannot be found in any respectable Asian grocer in your part of the world.  Happy hunting.

Just shove all the files in a directory somewhere and make the usual additions to your menu config.
