Nanoo Nanoo, Ben NanoNote

Readers of Booboo’s most excellent Dingux.com will have noticed a very subtle understated reference to the great dood himself receiving a prototype NanoNote.  The more curious among you would have instantly googled ajnd come to this page, which would reveal that the NanoNote is this beastie:

You can read more about the NanoNote here, but to save you the click, it has the following specs:

  • 336 MHz XBurst Jz4720 MIPS-compatible CPU
  • display: 3.0” color TFT
  • resolution: 320 x 240, 16.7M color
  • dimension (mm): 99 x 75 x 17.5 (lid closed)
  • weight: 126 g (incl. battery)
  • DRAM: 32MB Synchronous DRAM
  • headphone jack (3.5 mm)
  • SDHC microSD
  • 850mAh Li-ion battery
  • 2GB NAND flash memory
  • mini-USB: USB 2.0 High-Speed Device
  • speaker and microphone

This device is planned for release in Fall 2009, which means a lot to me here in Oz in August 2009, but I like the 2009 part of it anyway.  This is an open standards device with a CPU based on the same chip die as the one on the Dingoo, so there’s a lot to be excited about, and if I were the nice people at Qi Hardware, who are making this, I’d be sending one to Booboo too!

Comments

  1. I googled immediately :D
This device looks pretty promising, Dingoo meets Pandora. But i had liked a bit more decent specs, i.e. more RAM, better screen and bigger battery. And TV-Out is missing too, and i guess no USB-host?
But it´s open :) that means a lot!

  2. Oh well, that´s only their first product, look at this, the Ya NanoNote: http://www.qi-hardware.com/products/ya-nanonote/
Hardware will be decided together with the community! How nice is that? :D

  3. @eule: look at little linux laptop to see a thing like that, (of course based on the same beloved cpu from ingenics) with "more decent specs"... anyway i definitively liked more a smartq5 or smartq7, lovable little ubuntu-arm-touchy-geeky-things!

  4. ehm ... sorry ... i meant: www.littlelinuxlaptop.com

  5. Interesting project too!
One thing i wonder: How difficult would it be to make a kind of "standard" os/kernel for all those Ingenic based devices? Would be awesome, if the apps would all be compatible.
That maybe would make these devices a serious competition to the mainstream market and the devs could work focussed and had not to worry about porting their apps a hundred times for very similar devices.
Interesting times we live in... ^^

  6. @eule: kernel has to be custom because it has to support specific hw features (think about LCD, soundchip and so on), bu THERE IS an os that can run on those devices and it is called debian. Indeed, I bet that the custom os suggested for the littlelinuxlaptop is pretty much based on it. Unfortunately as you noted too, dingoo's and nanonote's specs aren't exactly exciting, so since debian it is not optimized for this particular cpu, performances would be probabilly ugly on these devices.

  7. This thing looks like crap. It is less powerful than the Dingoo, has no wifi, and same size screen and same resolution. What could it possible be useful for. FAIL.

  8. That's a cool device!

Dingoo + Pandora = Epic WIN!!!

  9. Pandora how? Because it folds? Dingoo without game controls - Epic Fail.

  10. It has game controls! Remember it's still a prototype, so the design may change in any time.

  11. The design for the Ben NanoNote is fixed from what i understand. If you don´t like it, make a suggestion to the devs and they´ll keep it in mind for the successor, the Ya NanoNote, coming 2010.
@batman52: I understand that, but would these customizations in the kernel for the hardware prevent i.e. Dingoo-apps from running? If not, epic win! :D

  12. So it's a fixed design huh. I need to take an eye on this device... Is this for gamers or just for developers?

  13. The way the keyboard is made it might be okay for playing some games.

  14. Has anyone seen the yinlips yd-g80?
It has wifi, game controls( it seems), camera, and a 533mhz samsung, and a 4.3 " inch screen. only thing is it runs on Wince.

  15. The yinlips yd-g80 has been noticed...

Interesting piece! Also deserving some attention.

  17. cool design. but... 32kb of ram? wtf!? the cherrypal africa has more ram than that, and more cpu speed! WTF!

EPIC FAIL. I was actually looking forward to seeing this notebook have decent respectable specs, but these guys are just looking to soak up everyones hard earned dollar.
