Booboo Linux clarification

Another pulse racing video!:

However, Booboo would like to clarify as follows:

"It's not going to be a "release" understood as a more or less finished
work. It's just a way of saying that I will be posting all the
information and all the work I've done.

In fact, I just haven't done it before because I was too busy and so
excited that I didn't want to lose time organizing and publishing the
info. Now that all the basics are working, I've reached a milestone
where people can actually program under dingoo linux, and it's time to
dedicate some effort to publish all the info, so others can advance in
parallel with me towards a full firmware replacement.

Once what I have now is available to anyone, I intend to:

1- Make dual boot work.
2- Complete hardware support.

Dual boot is not necessary for programmers (which can develop using
USB boot) but is for users, so it will be soon required after
programmers start releasing programs for dingoo linux.

So, I'll focus on the kernel and let others build the user space
programs: firmware menu and emulators and whatnot."
Once the material is up on Google Code however, I'd anticipate lots of activity. Just don't necessarily expect on day 1 files which can be installed and launched on the Dingoo without some level of tech savvy. Browse around Google Code and you should get the gist of what the site is about.

This, of course, should not be allowed to detract from what Booboo has singlehandedly done here!

(Also, I hope someone tells me what to do when the stuff is on Google code:).)

    Tiene una pinta fantastica :D :D :D

  3. I love this and how fast its progressing, thank you very much and keep it going Booboo, cant wait for a native release =D !!!

  4. I got too excited... but I'll wait.

  5. That's great news :)

I hate to annoy developers (I'm in OSS myself so I know the feeling) but I really think focusing on dual boot isn't the right way to go, at least in the mean time. If BooBoo can be optimised to run nearly or as lightly as the base firmware, I don't see a future in running anything else but it. (Though I bought my Dingoo yesterday purely as an emulation toy, not as a video player or MP3 like a lot of the people who post reviews on DX did).

So instead of having to wait for the SDK and eager people to port emulators (and for that matter anything) to the Dingoo, existing linux code can be modified and we can get higher quality apps a hell of a lot faster, and most importantly not have to worry about the future development and life of Dingoo. Hell, with a good software suite Chinavision might end up shipping the units with it preinstalled. :)

Good luck with development, thanks for your work thus far, and be sure to keep everybody posted!

  6. Yeah, I kinda feel that as well... Dual boot feels unnecessary once we got linux fully native, 100% supported, it would imo be better to go with a linux firmware and make it autobooted on the dingoo IMO :) !

  7. Same here, I could care less about dual-boot. The original firmware is crap & I'd just end up booting into linux every time anyway. I'm sure everything will perform much better anyway, so I see no advantage to keeping the original firmware intact. Even as a temporary solution until linux is 100% it just isn't worth the effort.

  8. agreed with the above comments, im not interested in the old firmware now that some headway is being made with linux. i know it might be a while until its fully operational but im willing to wait, dualboot not necessary imo.

  9. Booting original FW is good for playing "7 days". While there are not a lot of games now, more may come so dual boot is definitely useful. Also some people may choose to write homebrew for native system not linux for whatever reason.

BTW, I couldn't agree more with the part "it's time to dedicate some effort to publish all the info, so others can advance in parallel with me" :-) Many thanks for such effort.

While booboo is insanely quick and capable, it is a bit frustrating to watch one hacker having fun porting gmenu2x while the basic A320 linux patches are still not available.

    ReplyDelete
  10. booboo wants to have dualboot because the original firmware has the radio player and the tv-out function.
The booboo's linux isn't capable (yet).

    ReplyDelete
  11. Would it be possible to have an option in gmenu2x to boot the original firmware so linux would be the default firmware, but we could boot into the Dingoo official firmware if we wanted to play 7 days?

  12. If Booboo would read this, or if someone could ask him:

Have the possibilities for Y/B button fix been looked into, and is it confirmed that it CAN be fixed with firmware/software patch, or is it in fact hardware related?

Anyways, looking forward to run this on my Dingoo =) !

    ReplyDelete
  13. He wrote few days ago in the spanish forums that Y/B problem was only a software glitch, so I suppose that there is no problem in linux version.

    ReplyDelete
  14. WHAAA.... Omg, I love you BooBoo (well, not literarily, but...) XD XD XD

    ReplyDelete
  15. Martin: I think he alredy confirmed in spanish forum that it is not HW problem and each button can be detected separately without any problems (each one has its own GPIO line) so it seems like pure software bug in dingoo firmware.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Booboo, if you read this, congratulation!
And I would like to know... Was the Y/B issue fixed?

    Hugs.. good job!

  17. I wonder why everyone wants no dual-boot...
remember: all emulators are for the original firmware, so if you get a linux-only firmware, you´ll have no emulators, till some are ported.
also i don´t think, dual boot would be a big hazzle to start, it should be power + up or left or anything for linux, else original...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah, would prefer some key-combo at boot for original firmware, or that linux and dingoo have two different "directory roots", where you with a menu option could browse the "original" root and start the "old" files from within linux!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would like to have dual boot as well, for music, movies, radio, and recording, however if all those get supported equally in the linux firmware, I would think about single booting linux.

    ReplyDelete
  20. thanks so much for all of your hard work, booboo! i feel that dual boot would be best...at least for now.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Great. As soon as there is the first good genesis-emulator for dingoo-linux, I'm gonna buy this little fella. It's just amazing how fast this is progressing and it shows both how capable booboo is and how portable linux is.

  22. booboo sos una masa, haceme un hijo, jajajaja
que tipo groso dios mio,me encanta el laburo que se esta tomando para sacar el dingoo linux

    ReplyDelete
  23. you can adapt this to the linux gemei X760+?

    ReplyDelete
  24. BooBoo capeón tu es...
